SINGING sensation Lira is ecstatic about her just having gone five steps ahead of fellow musicians by releasing her Lira Live in Concert DVD in the technologically advanced Blu-ray format.
Lira launched her Lira Live in Concert DVD yesterday at Sony Music head offices in Westcliff, Johannesburg. The concert was recorded live at Carnival City last August as a standard DVD.
She is the first artist in South Africa to release a live recording in the new Blu-ray format, which is increasingly replacing DVDs overseas for both music and movies.
"I am happy for various reasons - first for making history as the first African musician to release a live performance in the Blu-ray format and, secondly, for African musicians to compete globally with international artists.
"My generation of Africans honestly believe we can compete with the best in the world and this is an example of that," Lira said.
"Considering the fact that this is new technology, and I love technology, someone had to take a risk," Lira said.
She was with project director Warwick Allan, executive producer of the product Robin Kohl, Maria Hadjidimitriadis and Geofrey Sutcliffe, senior label manager and product manager for Sony homes electronics.
The Blu-ray formatted DVD has already sold 1600 copies since its release a week ago.
To play the Blu-ray DVD one needs a high-definition television set and a Blu-ray player.
The retail price for the Blu-ray is R200
